Inspired by her travels and the people she meets along the way, Dorothy Shain found her artistic passions through her connection to the world and the experiences she has faced. As a mixed-media artist, Dorothy started her journey at Southern Methodist University where she honed her craft for studio art. While art has always been a part of her life, this South Carolinian now owns her own studio, Art & Light Gallery, and creates everything from paintings, to scarves, stationary, swimwear and more.
We had the opportunity to talk with Dorothy about her artistic journey and her passions for painting and design. Read on the learn more about Dorothy, her brand and her love for tea.
Harney: Tell us a little about you. How did you get to where you are today?
Dorothy: I am a mixed media artist based in South Carolina. Art has been a part of my life since the day I was born. I have an amazing family and friend group who supported a wild and crazy dream.
Harney: Where do you get your passion for art and design? What inspires you?
Dorothy: I would say my mom. She is really who instilled an appreciation for art and design in my heart. The process is what really inspires me.
Harney: What are your favorite forms of art? What is your favorite way to be creative? (Ex. painting, designing clothing, interior design, etc.)
Dorothy: Painting! It can serve as a total release for emotions. It is a wonderful outlet! I also love decorating my house.
Harney: Explain a little more about your style. What makes your brand unique?
Dorothy: Since my brand is still small, I am able to really get to know my collectors. Relationships are formed....which is always special.
Harney: What are some of the favorite places that you’ve been around the world and why? How do your travels influence your work?
Dorothy: South Africa. Travel serves as a huge source of inspiration for my work. Getting to see new things and meet new people always causes my wheels to turn.
Harney: What are some of your favorite pieces of work or career accomplishments? What are you most proud of?
Dorothy: Last year, I had the opportunity to create a line of swimwear with Anthropologie. That was very cool.
Harney: What is some advice you have for aspiring artists? What would you tell someone who is afraid to pick up the paintbrush?
Dorothy: Just do it! You have to!
Harney: Besides from creating beautiful designs, what do you like to do on your free time?
Dorothy: Yoga, cooking and reading!
Harney: Are you a tea lover and is tea a part of your everyday routine? If so, what does tea do for you?
Dorothy: YES! I drink tea all day and night. It calms me.
Harney: How does tea influence your work? What do you love most about tea?
Dorothy: Tea is part of a ritual. Sometimes, when I am stumped, I stop and go make a cup of tea. It helps me reset and gather my thoughts.
Harney: Do you have any favorite flavors/types of Harney & Sons tea?
Dorothy: The Hot Cinnamon Spice & the Chocolate are amazing!
